February 2009

I’ve been thinking about buying another sling for James. I love his Blue Celery one, but it’s stretchy and he’s getting heavier and I’m getting (marginally) thinner so he’s beginning to sag in it.  Plus I want something I can just pop him in and out of when we’re doing errands.  Buckling a grumpy baby in and out of a car seat is enough work without having to tie him into a wrap too.

I’m really not willing to shell out $80 for something that I may or may not like  that I have to buy online though.  So I made one using this site’s instructions.

I love it!  I’m so proud and James seems to be very happy in it too.  He snuggles in and grins at me.  This is a kid that I can’t keep up with when he’s on the ground, so the fact that he’ll settle in it while I load the dishwasher is very very good!  I’m totally making more when I get my hands on some pretty fabric.  Maybe something that wrinkles less too.

I’ve been working on sweater #3 as well and will put some pictures of what I’ve done so far once I block the pieces.  They won’t stay flat right now :p

And here’s a quiet moment this morning.

. . . aren’t quite the same when you’re on mat leave and your husband works 4 and 5 day shifts.

But we had a nice weekend for sure. Valentine’s Day was low-key, cards, chocolates and James got two books.

Family Day we went to see the local skating carnival and had supper at a friend’s place – complete with impromptu shows put on by the six-year-olds.

I made some new pants for James, kinda cute and kinda ugly and waaaay too big.  I might have to haul out the sewing machine to hem them, I don’t have the patience to do it by hand today.

Here’s James modelling them, and working up the courage to show off his newest trick – letting go of the couch and standing for a second or two on his own!  What a strong little boy!

Course he didn’t do it when the camera was out.  We really need to get the drywall covered.

And here he is having his morning coffee.

Soooo good!

We’ve been on our own again this week, as Paul’s been away working.  It’s tough to keep up with housework, eating and keeping the baby happy some days, but sometimes we’re pretty productive around here.  I love it when I can sit down at the end of the day and think about all the stuff I did!

James has been running low on baby food and I’ve even resorted to (gasp!) some jarred stuff I keep as back-ups.  The problem is, the recipes from his blender baby foods book are so yummy that I end up eating most of it (pre-blended) instead of freezing it for him.  Mmmmmmmmmmmmm baby food!  Seriously!

So we made carrots with dates (so good!) apple, pear and cranberry sauce (also so good!) and summer turnips (turnipy.  So good if you like that)  Don’t you just love our retro oven?  I do.  Gas stoves are so much easier to cook with than electric ones.  It’s just a bit chipped :p

James chasing the camera.  I just LOVE him!

Eddie is watching James with increasing concern these days.  James has always loved his kitty, but now, James can get to the kitty on his own and he moves FAST!  Up until today he’s mostly been pulling himself across the floor with his arms, but he’s getting better and better at crawling.  Today he’s hardly crept at all, and has managed to follow me from the kitchen to the living room on his hands and knees!  Yay, James!

He’s pulling himself up on everything now too, including the couch that has been Ed’s baby free haven.  Poor kitty.  James hasn’t been happier though!  He can get to everything – nintendos, garbage cans, kitty food and fur!  What’s not to love!

I bought a baby gate yesterday (and am all proud to have installed it myself – with the drill!) so now Ed is learning to jump over and find a safe place to sleep.  James follows him that far and then stands hanging on to the gate while Eddie curls up on the boot mat to have a little nap.

mpm8-1

Monday – Tropical Chicken (from the Blender Baby Food book.  Obviously mine won’t be blended!)

Tuesday – vegetble curry in the crockpot

Wednesday – golden carrot soup (hopefully I’ll make ebnough to freeze for later)

Thursday – leftovers

Friday – Out for supper in the city

Satruday – Hm.  Valentine’s Day.  I think  we’ll pick up something nice that day so it’s fresh.

Sunday – Ham, scalloped potatoes and veggies

That looks pretty yummy, if I say so myself!

I’m realy trying to make things that James can eat most of the time now.  It’s so much easier than making a second thing and he doesn’t seem to be too into the purees anymore.  He’s a big boy and wants to feed himself.  Not a while lot gets into a little boy’s mouth when he’s distracted by how fun it is to squish!

He’s eating nearly everything now, except the whole egg yolk, honey, berries, nuts, etc that little people aren’t supposed to have yet!  So far the only thing he’s not crazy about is peas.  Everything else he gulps down! (Including fuzz off the bottom of the vacuum.  Nice, James.)

James had a horrible day yesterday.  I noticed that the kitchen floor was a bit dusty,  so to keep James from eating the fluff I put him by his cupboard and got out the vacuum.   Seconds later I turn around to a flapping sound.  James managed to get *something* in his mouth and was choking on it.  Not gagging, but red face, no breathing, drooling all over the place choking.  I thought my poor baby was dying.  He managed to get it down and gave a terrific SCREAM!  The most beautiful sound in the world.  He was pretty scared, and even willing to snuggle for a few minutes as I sobbed over him.

Then of course I started thinking about what it could be.  We just installed new blinds in the kitchen.  Those tiny screws could easily fall unnoticed.  James eats anything.   I once caught him picking the fuzz out of the vacuum attachment  and eating that.  So I called Healthlink (lovely, lovely people!) and they told me to take him in to the hospital.

So James had his first X-ray this weekend.  Turns out they couldn’t see anything at all, but I felt better.  And a baby’s skeleton is so cute!  His whole little torso fit on the slide!

Then when we got home (via a ride from a wonderful friend!) He was playing by his shelves, holding himself up and fell *splat* on the edge face first.  He has a purple bruise up the side of his poor little head.  James went to bed early last night so he wouldn’t get hurt anymore and so Mommy could let her nerves settle!

On a happier note, I know all Mamas think their baby is the cutest in the world, but look at this:

I could just eat him up.
